The Fourth day
For more information or to book a weekend
Started in Spain, when the young
men wanted to rediscover their Christian roots after the Spanish Civil War. Plans for a pilgrimage of 70,000
men to the shrine of St. James at Compostella had to be postponed due to the World War II.
It did however take place in 1948, because of
the success of it, a short intensive course was made of the lessons learnt. Bishop Juan
Hervas, set up the first three day weekend as we know it in Majorca in January 1949 .
Movement spread to Latin America and then into the USA. In 1968 in
San Francisco, the a joint Cursillo was held, of Anglicans and Roman Catholics.
Modifications were made to fit the Anglican ethos, and since 1972 the
movement has spread to most diocese of the Episcopal Church.
It came to Britain in 1981, and is currently in 31 Church of England Dioceses. The movement has spread worldwide,
and is part of many Christian renewal resources.
Cursillo was 'gifted' to us from the Diocese of Canterbury.
Our first weekend was held in March 2000, at the Southwark Diocese Training Centre at Wychcroft.
We completed our 15th weekend in September 2007, which was also held at Wychcroft.
All of our weekends have been full of prayer, love, fun, laughter and have been thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and staff.
The support from our Bishops, particularly Bishop Lindsay, our friends in Canterbury Diocese,
and all the Cursillo communities throughout the UK and the World has been amazing.
In September 2005, we hosted the Ultreya GB, where over 250 Cursillistas from 28 Dioceses, including visitors from
Christchurch, New Zealand came together to share friendship and worship.
Cursillo is a method of supporting and encouraging our lives as Christians.
Cursillo (pronounced "kur-see-yo") is a Spanish word meaning "short course" .
Cursillo is a movement within the whole Anglican Communion.
Cursillo in Chichester diocese began and continues with the blessing of our Bishops.
An opportunity to grow in faith.
A chance to experience the love and grace of God and the joy of Christian fellowship .
A way of building a continuing Christian community to help one another on our spiritual journey.
It embraces the insights and good teachings of all the traditions of the Anglican Church.
It is a movement within the church and not outside it, so it works together with groups and organisations in a parish.
People just like you - laity, clergy - anyone who is..............
curious....
searching....
discovering....
growing....
wanting to be glad and confident in their faith.....
This is the first three days: It begins on a Thursday evening and ends the following Sunday afternoon.
During these three days those attending live and work together, listening to talks given by different people, both lay and ordained.
You will hear talks on Ideals, Grace, Obstacles to Grace, the Life of Prayer, Study, Action, Lay People in the Church, Sacraments and the
Christian Community .
The talks lead to a lively discussion in small groups.
Learning, praying, sharing, singing, laughing, and living together is the basis for discovering what it means to say, "We are the body
of Christ"
The sponsors are first of all friends of their candidate. And their primary role is to show that
friendship and to nurture it.
By sponsoring, they thus have someone to walk within true
friendship.
Before the Cursillo weekend, they ask their
candidate to fill out the application form and submit to those in
charge.
They prepare their candidate, answer their questions and help
them to fully profit from the experience they are called upon to live.
They attempt to eliminate any obstacle that could hinder their
participation in the weekend sessions,
i.e. problems with money,
transportation, care of the children and security of the house.
After the weekend, sponsors continue to nurture this
friendship. In particular they facilitate the candidate’s integration
into the Cursillo community.
Just be open to what happens
Simply take a fresh look at what the Church has always taught - Good News - the miraculous and joyous discovery of Christ's endless love
Yes! There are no tricks, no gimmicks, no hidden mysteries only revealed to the initiated!
You aren't expected to know or do more, just reflect on being more!
The weekend is not an end in itself but very much a beginning.
After the weekend we hope you will be able to meet in a small local group this is known as the Fourth day
The Fourth Day is where we continue our journey
together, and is the most important part of Cursillo.
We support and encourage one another as we seek to live and work to God's praise and glory.

Fourth Day page for more information about the Fourth Day.
